"Thank you George, I’ve really enjoyed putting this together and getting to read lots of great YouTube comments along the way- I’ve added one that resonated with me for each song :) "
1. The Pharcyde - Passin' Me By (1'59" - 2'09")
from The Pharcyde - Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde (1992)
"@massivegat5087 “ …It don't matter if you a thug or a nerd we've all had our crushes pass us by…”
"One of the first ever gigs I went to see was The Pharcyde. I was 18, and still very much a geek, and my cool older sister in Copenhagen took me to go and see them play at a local club called Rust. I remember the energy in the room; how hyped everyone was so see them, the free beers we got from my sister’s friends at the bar, and almost feeling like an adult. I’m still so captivated by them and this track. I love their cadence, complex phrasings and flow, transitions, but most of all their humour and wordplay. There are some lines that stayed with me that I didn’t fully grasp back then but came to understand with age - “ I guess a twinkle in her eye is just a twinkle in her eye”. It’s almost Shakespearean.
I still love them and I still love an underdog."
2. Auclair - Mersea Mersea Me (3'58" - 4'06")
from Auclair - Semaphore (2014)
@serpentwithfeet563 . “YESSSSSSS”
"Auclair’s compositions are always so explorative and expansive. I keep coming back to this whenever I put together a playlist or someone asks me about my inspirations.
I love the blend of electronic and organic sounds in this; the percussive and rhythmic patterns that drive the track, the dissonance in her voice, and the synths that keep you suspended in a really beautiful yet unnerving way.
3.58 - 4.06: I love the tension and build up to the drop at 4.06. I feel like I’m going up a rollercoaster and questioning my decision."
3. Mark Hollis - A Life (1895-1915) (2'54" - 3'04")
from Mark Hollis - Mark Hollis (1998)
@hughlemma6093 “No one manipulates space and silence as masterfully as Mark Hollis”.
"There are so many beautiful moments in this, you really just need to listen to the whole track lying down with your eyes closed, but between 2.54-3.04 when the shaker comes in (!), wow, the sound is so big yet intimate. I feel like I can hear it right between my eyes. And between 3.00-3.04 when everything else drops out..it’s so simple, but it stops me in my tracks every time."
4. Iman Omari - Hillman (Lisa ßonet/1992) (1'06" - 1'16")
from Iman Omari - ESC vol.2 (2014)
@DomVandelay “I wish this was the actual intro for the series.”
"I’m so glad we’re using YouTube videos so I can pick a video edit & loop by GodsConnect. This one is Iman Omari’s “Hillman (Lisa ßonet/1992)” over the intro to the series “ A Different World”.
It just make me happy, really. The colours, the joy, the way they move and dance in and out of time to the music whilst the shakers propel you forward. Between 1.06-1.16 all the claps line up with the video edit. It’s so satisfying!
I wish I was there."
5. Meshell Ndegeocello - Choices (2'46" - 2'59")
from Meshell Ndegeocello - Comet, Come to Me (2014)
@tribeforthe216 “ I have an appreciation for everything you create”
"Meshell’s artistry is a consistent source of inspiration and admiration. Nearly every year for the past 10 years I’ve gone to see them play and I always feel like I’m going to see a friend. 2.46-2.59: When the piano comes in and takes you somewhere you didn’t expect. It’s just wonderful.…“ So many colours. I choose you”."
6. Jesse Johnson - Be Your Man (2'09" to Infinity)
from Jesse Johnson - Jesse Johnson's Revue (1985)
@DaLawn “ When I learned this bass line as a teenager U couldn't tell me S#!T”.
"Spring is here and everyone’s got a pep in their step, so naturally I’ve been listening to this jam all week! The bridge is so delicious; at 2.09, just before it comes back in again, he goes “ Clap your hands, I want to sing my line”, and I just want to tell him “ Sir, don’t worry I’m here for it”.
7. Meara O’ Reilly - Hockets for Two Voices: IV (1'04" -1'14")
from Meara O’ Reilly - Hockets for Two Voices (2019)
(Comments turned off, so here’s a comment from a whatsapp group) “Omg, I love it!”.
"Hocketing is so slippery, but I love the aliveness when you’re in it; you’re constantly adjusting your time and pitch and tuning to your partner - moving as two halves of one.
It’s incredible to think she’s recorded both parts- I can’t imagine how long it took!
1.04-1.14: I love the movement of the alto part in this section."
8. Paul McCartney - Kicked Around No More (3'28" - 3'38")
from Paul McCartney - Off the Ground (1993)
@peteriversfanclub . “A thing of beauty......is a thing of beauty forever!..”.
"My favourite way of listening to music is out on a walk, and I’m up and out most mornings. Once I was on my way to a recording session and when I arrived, my friend asked me what I was listening to just then. I replied “Heart of Gold” by Neil Young, and she went “ Ah, I’m in my ‘dad rock era’ too”.
It made me laugh, but I also loved the idea of “ dad rock” as a theme, so I went home that evening and had a think of of what I would include in my fictional “ dad rock era’ playlist and this Paul McCartney track came to mind (although I highly doubt my dad would have been into it).
3.28-3.38: It’s so heart wrenching, but there is a resolution and acceptance in his voice. Like when you finally decide to move on. It feels like it could be the B-side to The Pharcyde’s “Passin’ Me By”.
